Post Re: smartcast fishfinder
i have one, i got it a bout 4 -5 years ago, mail order from the states, its the rod mounted one with a supposed 40 m range, ive used it on the odd occasion in the last few years, and its not massively useful, it seems not to show weed sometimes and other times it will, you can tell when its going over gravel as the depth measurement goes crazy as the signal bounces of all the stones, on a plus side it seems to work at about 80 - 90 meter range, it will give a reasonably accurate depth reading it is useful as a general guide line, so that less plumbing would be needed, it would also be useful if it came with some trebles in the back, as the pike seem to love striking at it. once the batteries in the float are dead u need to buy a new one. it supposedly finds fish about every couple of seconds, but im not sure.

someone on my pit was using the larger spec one and that supposedly tells you the substrate, anyway his model shows small med large on the fish front, and where they are in the water column, in a normal long range swim it showed him fish 4ft off the bottom at 30 yards, long story short he caught a 48lb 8oz mirror from that spot on his first session.

i think they have there uses, but are expensive for what they are.

At the end of the day you take from this sport what you put in, using modern technology to find fish, map the bottom has its uses and obviously works for some. I wont deny in the past curiosity has had the better of me seeing these toys on the bank and having a nosey, however personally I wouldn’t use one myself, I would feel like I have cheated in some way and not deserved the capture due to a lack of water skills being present. but if you want one and think it will help your fishing, get one, but remember they wont tell you when and where the carp feed, only show you where they are at that time and point out potential holding places. I think its fair to say they have brought many anglers a few prise specimens when without the toys they would have blanked.

I don't like seeing people use them on our club lakes ... everyone knows the spots but people walk rounf the lake trying to find where the fish are ad disturbing most swims.

one came with my baitboat tried it once at the lake not even to fish as they wanted a view of the bottom on the lake its very good. Since that one time i have sold it for £100 and purchased someting more useful. I would rather use my water craft and marker rod personally but can be a good bit of kit pretty accurate but just not for me

I don't think they are particly good at finding fish and I have never used mine for this purpose I've only used it a few times it was quite usefull in a really weedy swim as it found me a small gravel spot. When I really struggled with the marker

Like in lake escapes with matt Hayes that would make modifying rigs simples...
